Chapter Eleven

Karen made sure the volume on the baby monitor Leslie gave her was turned all the way up. Maisy had finally gone down for her nap. Hopefully, Daniel McAlister, her old high school friend, wouldn’t be late and they could conduct their meeting while the baby slept. She waited on the back porch, having told him to park by the garage. As far as everyone was concerned, she was battling the stomach flu and had asked everyone to stay away until she was no longer contagious. That included Mrs. Pat, who’d offered several times to bring her some soup to help with her tummy issues.

If only her real issues were easily solved with a hearty bowl of broth soup.

A white pickup loaded with beams of lumber pulled into the drive. On the door, a sign read: McAlister’s Cabinetry. Est. 1941. In the middle was a beaver holding a saw.

Not very original, Karen thought, but cute anyway. A man with black, wavy hair hopped out and made his way around the front. She stood and waved to catch his attention. He stopped beside the passenger door. His flannel shirt was open in the front, revealing a faded blue t-shirt underneath. Paint and stain spots splattered his jeans and boots.

“Don’t look at me like that Kare-bear.” Daniel chuckled. “You said to hurry over, so I didn’t bother to change into anything resembling a lawyer. Besides, I sold most of my suits to Jerry’s intern.”

Jerry Myles owned the Myles Law firm of Madison Creek. He’d also gone to school with them and was another who’d opted to stay close to where his family tree grew.

Daniel reached into the passenger seat and pulled out a leather briefcase. “Speaking of such, if you needed legal advice, why didn’t you call him?”

Karen folded her arms over her chest as she leaned against one of the posts. “Because I told you. What I need to discuss doesn’t need to get out. I trust you more than Jerry.”

Daniel’s long strides had him on the porch in a few steps. He stopped to plant a friendly kiss on her cheek. “It sounds very clandestine and all. Are we talking out here? Or do you wish to conduct our top-secret meeting inside? One can only guess who might be hiding in the bushes taking notes.”

She gave him a playful shove and told him to have a seat on the patio. “It’s a beautiful day. I baked some cookies. Would you like a cup of tea?”

He stopped and took in the spread she’d set out before he arrived. “Oh boy, I’m in for it, I can tell. These aren’t store bought.” He plopped into the porch swing. “Did you make someone mad? I won’t end up having to bail you out of jail, will I?”

“Oh, stop with your joking.” Despite her scolding, she grinned at her friend. She’d been shocked when he’d left his New York law firm to return home to work with his dad. But nobody was as shocked as Daniel’s father, Paul McAlister.
